Bar Harbor is a town on Mount Desert Island along Maine’s Frenchman Bay. It serves as a gateway to the mountains and cliffs of neighboring Acadia National Park. It is known for its stunning coastal beauty, its many yachts and lobster boats, and its view of islands and ocean in settings that can range from glistening sunlight to thick fog and mist. It slows our lives down so we may appreciate nature and the relationships with those in our lives whom we love even more.
Acadia National Park protects the natural beauty of the highest rocky headlands along the Atlantic coastline of the United States, an abundance of habitats, and a rich cultural heritage. At 3.5 million visits a year, it's one of the top 10 most-visited national parks in the United States. Visitors enjoy 27 miles of historic motor roads, 158 miles of hiking trails, and 45 miles of carriage roads.
The conserved land consists of 65 acres of woodlands and a half mile of coastal frontage with spectacular views of the Acadia Mountains, Stave Island, Calf Island, Schieffelen Point and Schoodic Mountain. This preserve features two trail loops with beach access. Along the Flander’s Bay Trail, peer into an old well. At low tide, large areas of the rocky beach are open to explore. Eider ducks raft up on the rocks just off shore and shorebirds work the rack line of the extensive rockweed colony along the shore.
At Mandala Farm we specialize in farming with Fjords. These horses provide us with the horespower we need to plow and cultivate our gardens, bring in our hay, haul out firewood and help with our other farm chores. In addition to the Norwegian Fjords and the crops they help bring in, we raise Cashmere goats, chickens, sheep, cows and pigs. We raise these animals for fiber and meat. They are all grass-fed, naturally raised, free of hormones and antibotics, as is best for their health and ours.
Schoodic Woods Campground is the newest campground in the park and located 1.5 miles (2.5 km) southeast of Winter Harbor on the Schoodic Peninsula. It is approximately 60-70 minutes from Bar Harbor and other areas of Mount Desert Island.
ONE OF THE MOST SCENIC AND CHALLENGING PUBLIC NINE-HOLE GOLF COURSES IN NEW ENGLAND. Grindstone Neck Golf Course, founded in 1891, is a rare jewel on the rugged Maine coast. Every hole at Winter Harbor’s nine-hole Grindstone Neck Golf Course delivers a water view of the Harbor or of Frenchman Bay and its famed pink granite-sculpted shoreline. This parkland, nine-hole course, with its blue grass fairways, professionally manicured poa annua greens, and stunning ocean views, is open to the public seven days a week.
Northern Corea Heath is a 600-acre property that links the National Wildlife Refuge to the south and Grand Marsh to the north. The wetlands and associated uplands here provide habitat for inland and coastal waterfowl and wading birds, migrating land birds, rare plants and unusual plant communities.
Frances B. Wood Preserve’s 438 acres sits above the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge on the West Bay. It protects the upland area of a watershed that contains significant tidal estuaries and mudflats.
